I have a 98 xj 4door, 3in lift, 33's, all aftermarket exhaust and intake. Ive been having motor problems, it overheated a couple times and its been downing coolant without a leak since then. My guess was the head gasket also cause the foamy oil on the oil cap. My trannsmission seems kinda sloppy since i put on the 33's and my idea is to swap the motor and tranny with a motor and tranny assembly from a 99 xj. Same motor same tranny. My question is; being a different year xj will the check engine light stay on after i do the swap or will everything match up and be all set? Some info on this would be greatly appreciated!

i would start with a head gasket replacement, get the head plained level because it is probably warped. and proper gearing in your axles should take care some of the slop in your trans. if not you can just swap the trans from the 99 into your 98.


but do the motor fix first, get your codes read, fix the problem with the codes, have them reset. if more codes pop up fix them too.

OBD2 monitors everything on the cherokee it will tell you what is wrong.
