Default 1997 XJ- Identify this switch panel

My 98 XJ has this on the dash. It appears to be a knockout for a switch panel.
What would this space have been used for?
Is there enough space behind there to mount switches? The switches I'm looking at are approximately 1-1/2 inches deep.

Could it be something used on right hand drive models?

That's for the Diesel Information Center.

Most people do what you're doing and drill holes for switches

Here Here. Its unfortunate but its reality. Its awful thing things don't go the way you plan, and because of miscommunications they don't get fixed.

I can always hook my code scanner up to the jeep to find out whats wrong. I've yet to find a woman scanner that offers the same service.

In any case, its neat to see what goes in particular spaces. I would have never imagined it was for diesel-specific lamps. I didnt know the Police-package XJ had a different switch panel down there that had like four or five switches on it

Still puzzles me why smaller diesel engines weren't popular/sold in the US, they killed the diesel for XJs early on, and i dont think the US Hilux ever had the stout diesel its reliability was known for abroad.
