Default 1997 Cherokee Limited Rear Grinding Noise

To All,

I've just purchased a 1997 Cherokee Limited and I'm experience grinding noise in the rear when I let off the gas. This is my first 4x4 vehicle and I'm becoming familiar with all the 4x4 components, what to inspect, and the terminology as well.

Thus far I've replace both front axles, new brakes, and new rotors. If anybody can give me any direction on what to inspect or what may be the issue I'd highly appreciate it. I believe the axles are okay in the back but may be wrong.

if the vibes from the rear why change everything in the front? sounds like your u joints on your driveshaft... crawl under there and try and move it up and down NOT twist... up and down and left and right... in neutral... dont get ran over...

Thank you for the reply and direction regarding the grinding noise. I replaced the front axles because the boots were torn and clinging/clinking when I turned.

I'm most definitely going to run down and check that out and get back to you. Thanks!!

I hate to ask this newbie/inexperienced question, when you refer to neutral, do you mean just the transmission or the 4x4 as well?

just the tranny is fine... you just dont want a lot of torque still resting on the driveshaft...
