my 96 has the 5.2 liter v8 and i believe the d30 front axle. the other day i noticed the smell of burnt axle fluid and a howl. checked the diff. cover and it was burning hot!!!, and leaking. i had been hearing the howl. i know that something in there went, but i'm not sure where to start. i pulled off the cover and saw no chipped or broken gears or shavings. ( just jet black stinky fluid) then resealed and put in new fluid up to the plug. still the same howl. hopefully some one can give me step by step instructions on what to fix and how to do it . i'm new to jeeps and this site, but i'm a diehard. thanks a lot .
