Thumbs down 1996 AW 4 "Limp Mode"

Ok so a week ago Friday, I was heading to my friends house to hang out, I got about 1/4 mile outside of my town, and it started to not want to shift, it seemed like it stayed in 2nd gear, and just kept revving and losing speed. It was making a whining noise, which I thought was part of the exhaust but turned out to be a part of the transmission. I pulled over and put it park, then put it in reverse, after doing so, it wouldn't go. It just seemed like I put it in Neutral, when I had it in D R 3 etc. I then turned it off, then started it 2 minutes and it would go into reverse but with the same weird whining noise, and almost a grinding noise. I literally have no idea what it could be. It's my DD and the last thing I would want to do is have to sell it due to not having the funds to fix it, or being able to pull it. i have never worked on a transmission before this so I'm going in blind essentially. Any advice would help greatly!

I did check the fluid level, I was about a qt or so low, and I put 1 qt in and it still proceeded to do the same thing.

So, did it suddenly start losing fluid?
As to "doing same thing" ,only moves in reverse and whines?
What did fluid look and smell like? When was the last time you checked it, if ever?

Has it thrown a CEL??

No it wasn't losing any fluid at at all. That's the weird thing. There are no leaks what so ever, and "the same thing" is that it wouldn't go into any gear, it would just stay in P or N. Or a few minutes later I could drive it for about a 1/2 mile home, then it would start going back into limp mode, not going faster than 15 MPH and just revving. I haven't been able to check for a CEL yet.

And the fluid looked like it should and smelled fine, and I usually check it every month or so.

Same thing happened to me about a month ago. I changed the fluid and filter and it was fine.
