Default 1995 XJ - Fuel Vent Line???

Hey Guys,

I think I know the answer to my own question, but since this is fuel-tank related, I want to get it correct.

Under the rear end, I saw what looks like an old and frayed broken rubber line coming from the top of the fuel tank, and another broken rubber line about 8 inches apart (see pic), that I traced to a metal line, that goes to the engine bay by the firewall near the valve cover, then attaches to another rubber line (about 2 feet long) that runs under the car and dumps to open air near the transmission (see other pic). Is it correct to simply get a new rubber line and re-connect the broken rubber line near the fuel tank, which will in turn connect the entire line to dump to open air under the vehicle near the transmission? Seems like a long way to simply dump to open air. Thoughts?

In front of the gas tank. Look for 2 red arrows.

Under the engine bay, by the firewall. Look for 2 blue arrows.

That grey canister to the left of your last picture is your emissions charcoal canister. You should have an engine bay sticker that shows your emissions line routing. The line that runs from the tank should hook to one side of that canister than another line runs from the canister to the intake manifold where fuel fumes are sent into the engine to be burned. It shouldn't just dump to atmosphere and if it does someone messed it up along the way.

Dude, you nailed it. It appears that the previous owner cut the vent line near the fuel tank intentionally, and let it vent to atmosphere at that point. And then removed the vent line from the evap canister, to which there are two lines currently connected. The top thin line connects to the intake manifold/fuel pressure regulator, and the thicker line under it connects to fresh air at the air intake. Located under that thicker line is what appears to be an input/output that is capped, and beside it is what appears to be another input/output that is capped internally. It is a 1995 XJand pre-OBDII, and according to the paperwork in the glovebox, passed NC inspections earlier this year. Question is, is it safe to drive as is, venting to atmosphere??? I smell no gas fumes.

Looks like this evap canister part is discontinued as well.... Ugh....

And, it appears that this Evap Canister may not be the correct part. It appears too large for the area, smooshing the washer fluid lose as it enters the firewall. Also, see pic above. And electrical connection on top of the canister has been left unplugged. It may be for an option not installed on this XJ from the factory, but I've found pics online of an XJ canister, and they look like they have an electrical connection to them. Argh....

That last one looks like the hood light connector.

In your picture, the lower of the 2 blue arrows is the vacuum line to the Heater Control Valve or HCV. The HCV is an unnecessary piece of over-engineering and most folks (including myself) eliminate it. You can look up HCV elimination for additional info. Regardless it's not related to the evap or gas line.

Agreed. That lower blue arrow is slightly misplaced. I meant to point the arrow at the black hose behind the heater valve hose.

I crawled back under, and have located ANOTHER broken hose coming from on top of the gas tank. One on the left side, and one on the right (see red arrows in pic). Are they BOTH gas tank vent lines??? What did they at one time attach to? I know that at least one line runs to the emissions charcoal canister....

What I usually do is take a peek at the Parts catalog. That will have exploded out diagrams. It might also indicate where it goes. You can download it from xjjeeps.com I believe, or possibly cruiser54.com -> technical manuals link.

Wow, that is exactly what I have been looking for! I have found some break-out diagrams here and there, but this is a one-stop-shop.

When I give each broken line a little tug, I can feel that one of the 2 lines jiggles a little at its base. Guess it needs a grommet to seat it better to the fuel tank. Although it seems to run well right now. Add it to the list of stuff to do....

Yes the tank uses two vent lines out of the top from the rollover valves. Again look in the engine bay. There should be a sticker on the firewall that gives you a diagram of how the vacuum lines should be routed. I'll take a picture of mine soon and try to upload it here.

As long as you aren't leaking fuel it'll be safe to drive. The canister you have is the correct one for a 95.

Edit- Also the two lines on top of the tank connect to the same line that runs forwards to the canister via a 3 way plastic T. Easy to find at any auto parts store.

You'll probably see a slight increase in gas mileage if you hook it all back up.

I'd really like to, but I can't find the part. The dealer gave me an updated part number, but even it has been discontinued and they cant get one. My local parts stores can't get it either. I've seen used ones online, but no thanks....
