I have a 1994 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 and AW4 transmission. I got the Jeep back on the road in October after putting in a rebuilt motor and it has been fine since about 2 weeks ago when an annoying problem has developed.

When accelerating from stopping, the engine "stutters" for a second then continues. When this happens, the tach fluctuates up and down along with the CEL flashing but not staying on after the engine returns to normal. Its fine at highway speeds and basically any long driving without stopping.

I've been reading the several threads on this issue and some people I have seen have gotten it to go away after doing a tuneup and replacing the CPS, TPS, etc. I have all of those parts brand new on this rebuilt motor so I don't think thats the case.

Anyone else have any ideas?

where do you get fuel?(poor quality) I've Had issues with that. next might be a vacuum leak. dirty injectors. I would check cap, rotor, wires and plugs. fuel rail pressure.

I get fuel from Chevron, which is Top Tier fuel. I don't have a vacuum leak and the injectors are clean. Like I said, the cap, rotor, wires and plugs are all brand new.

things I have learned. new doesn't mean good. I would check the wires with volt ohm meter. check fuel rail pressure. clean throtle body,IAC. check plug gap and make sure they havn't fouled. what plugs are you running?

I was having the same problem with my 98. I had 3 month old mopar plugs, wires , cap and rotor. So they were eliminated in my mind. I could see the wires arcing under the hood in the dark. After chasing it for a week I decided to put a set of napa wires on it. That fixed it.
