1994 Cherokee Auto Trans swap?
Will a 6 cyl 4 x 4 auto transmission from a Grand Cherokee swap with a 6 cyl 4 x 4 XJ Cherokee auto transmission?

No... and you wouldn't want 95% of the Grand Cherokee trannies anyway...
There are millions and millions of AW-4's running around out there, they are not expensive at all to get from a JY.
Here is a link showing the Grand Cherokee transmissions:

The 42RE used in most of the GC 4.0l's is the worst one of the bunch... a really, really bad transmission.

If he has a 93, then he could have gotten an early production year one with the AW-4 or the AX-15. But that's the only year they are the same. I've sold three AW-4's to GC owners to replace the 42RE when it craps out...

Thanks for all the insight everyone and thanks for the Link to GC transmissions Whowey! I searched all over the internet and could not find any conclusive information. My friend has both a 1994 XJ and a 1994 Grand Cherokee and I wanted to see if his XJ trans would swap for the bad one in his Grand Cherokee. It looks as if he has the 42RE in his now!
