As OP stated........ Turns out my jeep was originally an automatic by where the wires were for the reverse lights, and the fact that they didn't go anywhere, spliced them up and finally had reverse lights! After I put everything back together, I went to start the xj and nothing. Lights and radio and everything come on, and radio cuts out when I try to crank.

Default Update

Forgot to update you guys last week, but no I didn't get a new starter seeing as how mine is fine. I asked my instructor at school for some tips or what he thought what was going on. (Going to school to become a mechanic) He showed me the wires to test on the starter relay and what voltage I should see and when, that way I could figure out the issue. I did eventually test the wires but I was pressed for time so I didn't figure out exactly what was wrong. So I made a jumper wire, removed the wire and jumped it like this. (Not my pic, but this is what I did)

Once that was in place I tried to start the jeep and it started right up.

Went to start the jeep up so I could head to drill this last weekend but the battery was dead, so charged the battery over the weekend. Came back from drill and the jeep once again started up.

But the other day went to do errands and the jeep died as I was trying to take off from the drive way. Kept trying to start it, nothing, put a little bit of fuel in it, still nothing, finally got it started and took it to the gas station and filled it up. After filling up it wouldn't start. Guy from the gas station brought out a jump pack and couldn't get it to start. Small repair shop just across the street that owns the gas station towed it into their shop using a 4 wheeler. They poked around the engine bay, checking voltage at the battery, coil, distributor, making sure there was spark which there was. Checked for fuel pressure on the rail, sprayed ether directly into the intake and nothing. They went on to checking the pulse width on the injectors and as they were on the second injector and I was cranking the jeep fired up. But if you give it throttle it'll cut out and die, if the throttle is "blipped" it wont die. They lastly checked my timing before I roughly drove it home and said that off of the timing light it was almost 30 degrees off which is insane. Never had issues like this up until now.

Talked to my instructor just yesterday and told him what was going on, he said to bring it to school so the other students and I could take a look at it, he also said to bring it in today. So went out to start it, and with no problems at all the jeep started on the first crank, gave it some throttle and its perfectly fine. Then I barely gave it throttle and it died. Wouldn't start back up, went to the engine and took the air hose off and then tried to crank it, and it fired back up, put the hose back on and let it idle. Then as I was going to back it up to leave, it died as I was giving it throttle. Looks like I'm gonna have to get it towed to the school as it still won't start.

So first I had issues even cranking the jeep, but now I can rarely get it started. I'm gonna get it towed over to the school tonight or first thing tomorrow. I honestly have no idea what's going on. Hoping I can get my jeep running again seeing as it seems it's all problems lately.

Was able to drive the XJ to school without any problems. After letting it sit for awhile it started it up. My grandpa did follow me in his truck just in case it died and we'd have to tow it the rest of the way. But we didn't. The XJ ran like **** driving it there, and in order to get it to the school I once again had to "blip" the throttle to not let it die. Blipped the throttle every time I came to a stop to get going, but other than that got it to the school fine.

Hoping this coming week I can start taking a look at it.
