Hello all,

So I have a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo that is giving me issues. I had the starter replaced and a new battery.

It is sitting at a shop right now and they said it is starting fine for them. They are 85% sure it is the Neutral Safety Switch, but they are not 100% sure. They do not really want to fix it because it seems "not broken" to them.

Basically, it has been not turning over while in Park, but sometimes it will start in Neutral and sometimes it will start in Park. It started in Park this morning just fine. Other times, it will not start in either. But then the next second, it will start in Neutral... most of the time it starts in Neutral. haha

The other day the "check engine light" came on.. but it hasn't come on since. The battery was old and weak so that is when I replaced it. BUT, still this intermittent starting problem. And when I say it won't "start" it simply does not turn over or anything.. no sounds whatsoever.

The reason I had the starter replaced (one month ago) is because the same exact symptoms were happening above...then it simply would not start and I had it towed to a shop which said it was the starter. It has been running great (starting in P or N) but now all a sudden the symptoms are starting all over again. So, it cannot be the starter or battery as both are new...

Any advice HIGHLY appreciated, since I do not want to be stranded....Thanks!

Check all your grounds associated with what you've replaced. Jeeps are funky with electricals and can give you a myriad of problems

It does sound like it is your NSS. Here is a link on how to clean it. Most of the times this will take care of the problem.
