AHA! a question I can finally answer with semblance of truth!

Ok, you hav a 91 ya? 4.0l ya? A/C option ya?

here is what you have to do..........

power steering pump... there are TWO bolts you must loosen.

the one on the very bottom,,,,can't see it from leaning over the engine. you have to feel it.

think its a 13mm or 15mm. Must have wrench on BOTH sides.
loosen it fully. Don't take it off.
Second, the adjuster bolt, it does not turn the way you think. At least to loosen. spray with wd-40 on the bolt assy directly (the adjuster bolt)
wait a while, think its a 10mm or 11mm........then using a ratchet keep turning until you get at least 3/4 to 1 inch play in the belt tension, then u should be able to use a large long ratchet/breakerbar/pipe whatever, and slowly wedge it (the breakerbar, etc) up against the solid part of the power steering pump housing and slowly squeeze it towards the engine block. once you have the adjuster loose as it will go this should be no problem. then you will have enough play to remove/re-install belt.

I have done this many many times. It does work.

cheers!

correct, I just did this on my 91 XJ, to adjuster bolt and nut on the bottom front, and the 2 on the back, mine slides up and down well, but the problem is not, the new belt still seems to be about 1 inch short, I can't get it to go over the power steering pump....any ideas ?
