.........the tranny only got to about 205 which is plenty cool enough to not be burning anything. tranny coolers are only necessary when pulling heavy loads (and a cherokee will have brake issues from something heavy enough to stress the tranny long before the tranny burns). Little known fact, AW4 is a Toyota tranny and is bullet proof like the 4.0..........
Nothings bullet proof, and I much prefer 160-170F tranny fluid temps.
205F sounds a little toasty but hey, if it works for u....

"I'm kind of curious because when I checked my fluid yesterday, when the engine was off and cold, the dipstick read proper on the cold side. But after driving around for 30 minutes and checking the dipstick, there was nothing on it. I checked it this morning and the dipstick read proper again on the cold reading side."

i don't know why...automatic tranny fluid never, ever, under any condition, should be checked cold and with the engine off for proper fill level.

page 87 of the 1989 Cherokee owners manual..
Note:if necessary to check the transmission BELOW operating temperature , the fluid level should be approximately at the ADD mark with the fluid at approximately 75 F (room temperature).....

AW4 is a slightly different, but close enough to call it the Toyota tranny, slightly different specs, but the same tranny.

This from a guy who drives a stock Jeep. Dude if i want lip from a stocker, I'll ask my 4 year old what he thinks, probably got more brains than you.
Um, your profile says you have a NP232 t case, I think that says it all, 232's don't belong in Jeeps, you either have a 231 (part time) or 242 (full time). So yeah, your discredited. And if somehow you really do have a 232 in it, I wanna see the adapter plate and the tag on it.
Now, instead of taking stabs at me for trying to help the OP understand that reading the fluid level on the dip stick with the motor off is not a valid reading, maybe you should chime in and tell him if he's driving around and the fluid disappears when it warms up, his fluid is low. Or wait, are you guys who do the same checks?

btw you can check your trans when cold but the Jeep still has to be running... a check when warm and running is best and more accuterate Just a fyi... I hope this help

agreed, as the OP has been told several times, cold will work in a pinch, but the motor must be running.
I have nothing against stock Jeeps, I have one myself
