Thanks, but I'll pass on the offer....not worthy of a ride like yours. Nothings bullet proof, and I much prefer 160-170F tranny fluid temps. 205F sounds a little toasty but hey, if it works for u....

AW-4 is made by Aisin Warner. It was used in Jeeps as well as Toyotas (as the A340h). It is not a Toyota tranny.

"I'm kind of curious because when I checked my fluid yesterday, when the engine was off and cold, the dipstick read proper on the cold side. But after driving around for 30 minutes and checking the dipstick, there was nothing on it. I checked it this morning and the dipstick read proper again on the cold reading side."

My original post.

Holy sh/t guys.
I don't know about you guys, but my dipstick has a reading for the cold, and reading for when warm/idle.

i don't know why...automatic tranny fluid never, ever, under any condition, should be checked cold and with the engine off for proper fill level.

just to confuse every one further...

page 87 of the 1989 Cherokee owners manual..

Note:if necessary to check the transmission BELOW operating temperature , the fluid level should be approximately at the ADD mark with the fluid at approximately 75 F (room temperature).....

205 after wheeling for 9 hours, would have been that hot even with a tranny cooler and dude your from texas, only 2 things come from texas, steers and (i'll be polite) and I don't see no horns, so I wouldn't let you get it if ya doubled what i want. Both the 4.0 motor and AW4 tranny are bullet proof, meaning they will last forever as long as you maintain them. I can't believe anyone would be on a Jeep site questioning how durable and reliable the drive train on them is. Do us all a favor and sell yours, you don't deserve to drive one.
AW4 is a slightly different, but close enough to call it the Toyota tranny, slightly different specs, but the same tranny.

This from a guy who drives a stock Jeep. Dude if i want lip from a stocker, I'll ask my 4 year old what he thinks, probably got more brains than you.

Now, instead of taking stabs at me for trying to help the OP understand that reading the fluid level on the dip stick with the motor off is not a valid reading, maybe you should chime in and tell him if he's driving around and the fluid disappears when it warms up, his fluid is low. Or wait, are you guys who do the same checks?

agreed, as the OP has been told several times, cold will work in a pinch, but the motor must be running.

I have nothing against stock Jeeps, I have one myself

So what your saying is that less than 2 years ago and a little less than 500 posts ago you knew so little about Jeeps that you didn't know what t case you had, but now your an expert and wanna talk $%#% to someone who has 10+ years of experience who was trying to help someone understand he was checking his tranny fluid wrong and at risk of frying the tranny because of it. I am not a know it all, far from it, I am actually going to UTI now to learn all about these new cars and the electronic aspect now and spending 60k+ after finance charges to do so, but I know my Jeeps (again not everything I can still learn), know how they are supposed to run, at what temp and how durable they are.
I am going to be the bigger man and apologize for my comment to you. I felt you were jumping on the band wagon of another member who jumped into the thread attacking me.
