Default 1989 Jeep Cherokee cluster swap

So I have a 1989 jeep cherokee and I've been trying to figure out if I can put a 1991 jeep cherokee cluster in my 89 jeep becasue I find it really annoying having the big gas gauge and an idiot light rather than having a small gas gauge and a big rpm gauge and I've only been able to find the 91-96 clusters that have the Rpm gauges if it is possible I really need help, I've been wanting an Rpm gauge since I bought the car

When I did my 85 all it took was swapping out the idiot switches for sending units and the idiot lights for gages and drop the tach in. That was all. I'm assuming it'll be the same for you.
As for the 91 gages...let's hope the electrical values are the same as 89. Have you checked the factory parts catalog to see if the gages are the same parts for both years ? https://xjjeeps.com

I just did a few days of research and found out that i can not put a 91 cluster in my 89 Cherokee because they updated from a cabled speedo to fully electronic so it would not be compatible but i found out that there were jeeps from 85 to 90 that did have the rpm gauge, these were more commonly found it Canadian or stick shift Cherokees but it would still be compatible with my car so if anyone knows of one that is not being used please contact me i would appreciate it

Here's an example
that i found online of what one would look like, sadly this one was already sold so i cant buy it so please notify me if you have one or know of any

one good thing with the 87-90 clusters, you can actually turn the odometer reading to match yours. something you can't do with the 91 and up.

I started this swap in mine a while back. How do you get the speedo cable back in? It's super tight back there?

Any tips on the switch to sensor swap would be appreciated as well.

Re connecting the speedo cable is a challenge. Pull up as much slack as you can and keep trying.
switches for sensors is easy. Just swap one for the other. The wiring and plugs work the same for both. The difference is in the plastic circuit film on the back of the instrument housing.
