Default 1989 jeep cherokee

Hi, all I am new to the site and just bought a 1989 jeep Cherokee that I believe to be lifted 8.5 inches on a long travel lift. my question is on the driver side their is a regular cv axle and on the pass side a axle like you would find on a regular yj with just a ujoint. does this seem right?

Thanks,

Matt

Someone probably broke an axle shaft at one tine and cobbled something to get by. Not normal. Dana 30 should have two axle shafts with u joints in them

ok so now looking on ebay I see the regular style axle shaft and see the cv style, and the cv says for my jeep exc selec trac, which now makes sense, so the person before me bought a cv shaft for the driver side and not the right axle shaft then for the driver side. does this make sense?

They are interchangeable, swap it out if it bothers you... The CV shafts were used in XJ's (and mainly ZJ's) generally equipped with the NP242, but they also came with ujoint shafts as well. As mentioned previously, someone likely used what they had on hand to fix a broken shaft. Given it's an 89 the CV's are about as strong as the stock 260 series ujoint anyway.

so if that's the case whats the big deal on the shafts that all say for my 89 Cherokee, except selec trac which I have in my jeep.

Nothing, it's just that you are looking at a parts catalog. The parts catalog just says what someone typed, and doesn't care about parts interchangeability.
The CV shafts will swap in where the ujoint shafts were same as the ujoint shafts will swap in where the CV shafts were. The CV shafts are smoother with a 242, on the road, but weaker on the trail.
It's the same deal as swapping a stock 260 series shaft for the abs and late model 297 series shafts.

Central axle disconnect, used a two piece shaft on the passenger side actuated by a vacuum shift motor. The system disappeared from the XJ/MJ platform in 92/93.
