I have a 1988 jeep cherokee(xj) it has the 4.0 I6
My jeep seems to have this really bad flat spot that has only gotten worse. when i give it a little bit of throttle (in gear) it just sputters right to death, but when i give it more throttle it is just fine. also sometimes(not everytime) when i give it gas to get up to speed quick, it sputters and doesnt accelerate worth $hit, just cruises slow no matter if im giving it full throttle, but after a couple seconds it stops sputtering and starts racing up to speed like it should. Now i have replaced the tps twice, cps, and iac. i think it may be a vaccum leak seeing as though its idle sometimes shoots up,or drops really low and can make my breaks not want to work. but i dont know how to accurately test which one it could be, but i have checked most lines that are visible. any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated. thank you

Go to the parts store and buy a can of starting fluid. Give every vaccum hose fitting a little shot and wait a few seconds. If the idle increases you've found your leak, if not you move on to the next one.

X2 on the tune-up also try cleaning your IAC or adjusting your TPS

thank you, i will try the starting fluid trick

it got a tune up just a few months ago, and i replaced the fuel filter a couple weeks ago. also tried seafoam.

its had this problem since i bought it a year ago, but just now started getting worse where it screws with when im accelerating. also it kind of boggs down when im cruising on the highway, and i can push my throttle down all the way until just before it will drop gears and the speed or rpms wont change. doesnt accelerate unil i drop gears and punch it.
which is the new problem and why i need to try to fix it before it gets even worse
