which trans is in my jeep? it's a 5 speed with a 2.8 engine. would it be a t5, peugot, or ax5? the spec page lists all three for that year, but i cant see them putting 3 different transmissions in the same year jeep.

hhmm i would think the BA-10... if you get under it and it looks like the tranny bolts down the middle as if the 2 sides of the transmission are bolted together vs front and back bolted together... then its the BA-10... peugot or whatever...

i was hoping it was a t5 so that i cojuld swap a ford 2.3 in fairly easily when the 2.8 craps the bed

yeah i havent read anything about that... lol... no idea about the 2.8 really... i know the 3.1 is like a bored 2.8 and the 3.4 is like a bored and stroked 2.8... all from cavaliers and luminas and stuff... i had a 3.1 lumina last year and that joker would actually get up and go... but it was uuugglllyy... lol... if i had a 2.8 i would look into swapping in a 3.1... wouldnt be worth it for the right 3.1... some had bad intake gasket problems that caused leaks like a head gasket... anyway... food for thought...
Several options available for that year, so it would be a guess without checking the tag on the trans.

yah, originally i was planning to swap in a 3.4 from a camaro when the 2.8 goes, but if it has a t5 in it, i'll probably get a ford 2.3 and a 2.3 t5 bellhousing and swap it out. i'm a big fan of the 2.3's and they can make good power. i really wouldnt mind swapping to a 2.5 either though...
heck i may just stick a 2.8 back in it.
i'm actually scared it has froze and busted, it's been sitting in the junkyard with straight water in it. it's froze, but still has water in it and there's no water in the oil....if it's busted i'll figure something out i guess.....

i gave him $50 to assure it doesnt go anywhere and nothing gets sold off it until it dries up so i can drive it out. he doesnt like the path to the junkard getting rutted up. we got 6 inches of snow last week and its starting to melt, so it's super muddy back there. i walked back there to check it out this morning and was sinking about 3 inches.

i wish i knew the answer to that question. it actually runs GREAT or did when it was parked. like i said it has since froze and is potentially busted, do not know yet.
he drove it to where it's sitting and about 6 months ago i put a battery on it and it fired right up. no noises, leaks, funny engine smells, none of the stuff that usually comes along with a junked vehicle. goes in every gear, front end engages, all gears on t-case work. body is also straight as an arrow but the clear is peeling, i cannot find ANY rust...wiring isnt hacked up like most 20+ year old vehicles, i only found one wire thats not factory and its run somewhere in the cargo area. interior was super nice before it sat in the JY with the drivers side window down and it got rained in...O YAH, and it's a 2 door
it has no title but only because he didnt take it when they offered it to him, he bought it to part out, but i spotted it before anyone got anything off it.

I took a BA/10 apart (after I blew it up) I took out of my cherokee after I swapped to a Ax-15.
its bolted together in half with 10 bolts. held together with studs and nuts on the *** end and on the input side it took me for ever to figure out that it was the bellhousing studs still holding it together.....end result of dismantling it was some scrap aluminum, and a bunch of nice paper weights. Oh and finding out that the input gear teeth actually stripped down to nothing! Long story as to how it all happened.
oh yeah in 89 the first half of the year the Cherokees had the BA/10 only, the 2nd half it was on option to get the Ax-15. Its a really straightforward swap to do if (or when) the BA/10 gives up. Let me know if it ever does, I memorized more crap during that swap than I will ever need, right down to the size bolts which are SAE and which are metric.
Cheers.

unless someone has a helicopter they want to come get it for me with, it's not going to move for a week or two, i am not going to rut his property up, he's a good guy and has let me get several things on credit, so i dont want to screw it all up over being impatient to get my play toy
