I read somewhere that it has to do with the fact they have to change the molds. But I think thats not the case anymore because there are a lot of 16" tires.

You got it in one. I thought about using 285's but those would defiantly rub.

I'll be changing tires soon, but I'm sticking with this size. Running a 4 1/2" kit. No rub issues, yet.

This will be my driver and trail runner. Nothing special.

It's the weekend. Here's a beer.

Whoopie!

Keep getting random offers on my icons..guess they are pretty desirable. Just havent decided if I want to keep em and run em with 35s and spacers, or get something different.

Back to the original question--There are a bunch of passenger cars and light trucks that have 4.5"-on-5-lug wheels. Ford Ranger is the first one that comes to mind. Ford Bronco II's also. The problem is that even the 15" Ranger or Bronco wheels usually only have a 7" wide rim. Most off-road tires are going to need a wheel with 8-10" wide rim (measured across where the tire's beads seat in the wheel: "inboard beadseat-to-outboard beadseat.")

I found some Ford Crown Victoria wheels in my local JY ($120 for five wheels--$24 apiece) that have 4.5-on-5-lug holes and that are 16" diameter with an 8" wide rim. The back spacing isn't too great though--6" (Stock XJ rims are back spaced 5".) I'm going to have to run aluminum spacers, and that's another $200. The 15" wheels I'm running right now have a 4" back spacing. That two inches is going to be a problem, and I may not be able to run the tires I want to run (Treadwright Max Trax M/T (D) 265/75R-16's) on these Crown Vic wheels. I may have to buy different wheels (dammit). I was trying to go the less expensive, "more hobo" route by going with JY rims, but I bought the Crown Vic wheels in the rain and like an idiot, I did not measure the back spacing with a tape measure before I bought them. ("Looks like they'll run okay--load 'em up, we're gettin' soaked.")

Life Lesson #1--MEASURE EVERYTHING AT LEAST TWICE.

If I wind up buying more wheels, I'm going aftermarket, 16" wheels, 8" wide rim with a 4" back spacing.

Hunt for icons, or break down and buy some cragars in the 16" flavor.
Here are what my 16" icons look like.
