Hey all, been lurking for a bit and I have myself in quite the quandary.

One of the lug nuts on my 01 is completely destroyed. I have a feeling it was cross threaded when I recently got some new tires.

I saw someone suggest removing the axle and grinding off the head of the stud and banging it out. Now, Removing the axle/hub is easy enough...with the wheel off. Is this possible, and if so, how, with the wheel on?

I had a lug nut break once and it wasnt able to be removed from the lug. To remove it I just drilled it out with a 1/2 inch drill bit. You have to make sure you get it centered. After that it pretty much popped right out. Put in the new lug, tightened it down using washers as spacers and I was good to go.

I stripped one once and got a stripped lug nut socket and it pulled it right off. Another time, I hammered a one size smaller socket on and that worked too.

I had to cut a few lug nuts covers off with a dremel to expose the inner nut inside them then I was able to get them off.

I have always had good luck using a stripped lug nut socket or beating a old socket on the lug nut.When you get it off buy some good lug nuts the cheap ones will give you problems later on.

Lug nuts are cheap buy new ones when you buy new wheels/tires. Then watch the studs to make sure they are in good shape, then every time a tire is changed that a "torque wrench" is used on them.

Yeah I started using a torque wrench every time I put my wheels back on to 100-110 ft pounds. Especially since I just put on new hubs and have brand new threads.

The shops just impact them back on and they strip out the threads. They don't care, they'll just tell you your stuff is worn out from "brake heat" and try to get you to pay for new ones. They'll never take the blame for over tightening.

I I've tried smaller sockets hammered on, breaker bars, impact wrench, and two different sets of socket extractors.

I'm at the point where I either drill it out or cut off the head of the wheel stud and bang it out.

Same thing, tried everything and nothing worked. Drilled it out in 10 mins or so and got a new stud and lug nut.
