Default 01 xj wont stay running

Hi I'm new to the
Form so what I got going on is I have an 01 xj that we picked up with an 87 xj the body was trashed we had plenty of parts to rebuild body we were under the impression that the key had to. Be programmed but turns out the 01 didn't come with that option the guy we picked it up from gave us the original tumbler we installed that no change still starts every time but dies with in the ten sec we have good fuel presser new plugs no vacuum leaks that we can find I'm still thinking its a key prob but at this point I've done just about everything but shoot it with my gun any ideas would be great thank

"still starts every time but dies with in the ten sec"

So what goes away fuel or spark? Have you done a compression test? Any codes?

"will stay running on starting fluid thow"

Check the fuel pressure with a gauge @ the schrader valve.

ETA: Scratch that ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"Ive not done a compression test yet code is a p1686 witch is no skim MSG received"

Whole different story, has the key been programmed to the vehicle?

Does the PCM reflect the correct VIN for the vehicle?
