I know this is not new but I'm at a loss. I have read and read. Over the past 14 years my jeep and I have blossomed a love hate relationship, I love my jeep and it hates to run. I have been down this rabbit hole before and I'm not excited about going down it again one bit here is the low down.

01 Cherokee sport
4.0 straight six
230000 miles

Haven't had many issues with this jeep other than the typical for this mileage.... Except that one time my rear freeze plug came out and my girl drove it 15 miles with no water... (reman block) parts have been replaced...

Driving the other day on the highway it sputtered and died. Pull over starts right up. First thought bad gas, I just filled up. So I get going again and it dies again. Now I'm sure it's got to be the gas, my jeep loves me and would never break down. As it dies several more time I curse the gas station and pull over. I repeat this cycle for the next 20 miles and then magic no more issues! Run it empty fill up fresh gas and heat. Until the next day. i get in to start it and it stumbles. Cut it off start it again and it runs fine. This begins to get worse, I'm thinking fuel pump probably the last oem part I have left on it. Check the pressure it's fine. At this point it's taking three long cranks to start. Then today dead. So I pull the ignition rail and no spark, hallelujah it's the cps, I get a mile of extentions and a wobbler in no time I'll be back on the road! Wrong... no spark.
My next guess would be the ignition rail, "it's not the oem but has a life warranty" so I got that going for me.

New rail tomorrow.
any other ideas would be nice I'm guessing not the rail it's only two years old but I'm starting with the free parts in the mean time.

 

If you get around to checking fuses and swapping relays, here's a pic of your PDC fuses and a pic of the relays in the PDC.


ASD relay and the Radiator Fan relay are the same and can be swapped.

 

Couple of thoughts:
Hard to believe an ignition coil could be open then magically repair itself, is there now / has there been any codes?
When the engine is running can you kill it by shaking the wire harness?
Is there a lot of slop in the ignition switch?

 

Have ran threw the fuses, have not played with the relays. Good thinkin

Left my scan tool in Nebraska for my old man who is chasing an issue on his LJ, I live in kc and can't get it running to get to the parts store... I'm just going to buy a new one today I think. I'll post Codes.
I do have a small vac leak that iI haven't found but it's been a year.

Also not running to shake any wires., I'm going to really check them over today, I ran out of light last night.

The ignition switch is crisp, but I can remove my keys at anytime. So....

 

Ran a scan
Cps
Ingnition rail 1 2 and 3
P0340 no camshaft reference at pcm
Changed ignition rail cleared codes
No spark cranked until code came back
P0340 came back

 

Spark at last spark at last thank God almighty I have spark at last!

Magnetic in the cam sensor came loose and garbled up my pulse ring in the synchronizer. New synchro and cam sensor and whamity bamity spark! Fired up on the first crank and quickly!

Lessons learned.
1 thank the forum - thanks fellas for advice on issues
2 if your dad has your scan tool always have a back up and run them codes
3 stop assuming every time you have no spark it's the cps
4 before making 5 trips to the parts store investigate ALL possible problems.
