Hello,

I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport with power locks that I've been having a problem with. My Driver's side door will not lock. Every time I hit the LOCK button on 2 different key remotes when it locks, you can hear something clicking from the lock, as if something is getting stuck. I also tried to manually lock the door from outside with the key, and that doesn't lock the door either.

I would like to fix it so my driver's side door isn't permanently unlocked. What would I need to replace on my Cherokee? Hopefully something relatively cheap lol. I'm thinking maybe it's a door actuator or something like that.

I'm hoping someone who has experienced the same problem has some info for me.

It's entirely probable that a rod has disconnected in the door. The rods that activate the lock and latch are held together to each other by a plastic joint. This can become detached or break. You'll have to remove the door panel and look at the metal rods. You can see how they are attached together and plainly see if one is detached from the other. If the joint has broke, they are available from the parts counter at any Jeep dealer.

 

It could be just really dirty. Try cleaning and lubricating the lock cylinder, the latch and the interior manual button if it has one.

also check if they are bent. mine was and it was a huge pain in the *** to fix.

 

Mine was bent and I fixed it in a couple minutes just bent it back until the locked worked. I had the Same issue on my old ford explorer which was a lot more difficult to get bent back to the right position. Guess it just takes practice.

 

For some reason the ends of the rods wouldn't come out of the plastic on the handle. I was afraid I was going to break the plastic so I bent it back with everything still attached which was a mistake ha

 

If the rod has bent, I've had good luck using a vice to straighten bent metal. Just take your time and do it slowly.

What I would be concerned with is what caused the rod(s) to bend in the first place.
