I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport that was totaled but had low miles and body rot and just found a 1989 Cherokee Pioneer with no rust and low miles on it but has a blown engine. Would it be possible to put the 2000 Cherokee engine in the 1989 Cherokee? If so, how much stuff would really have to be changed in order to do the swap?

I'm sure it could be done, but not for the faint of heart.

I've done a few full vehicle rebuilds, just have never done a swap between these two year Jeeps.

Okay. Here's the problems I see.

The head on the 2000 is prone to cracking and does not mate to the 99 and earlier manifolds. Someone does make an adapter.

You will end up keeping all the electronics from the 89. No problem.

I might be tempted to sell the 2000 motor and get one that's a bolt in like 99 and earlier.

Besides, a 2000 engine that runs has a premium price tag due to the fact the heads can crack.

I actually never thought about selling the motor, might end up going that route. I'm in no rush so might as well see if anyone bites.

Those 2000 and 2001s drop like flies and they're odd from all other years. You've got something there.
