Ok, here's how it works.

1) A member reports something they don't think is right or something that is wrong.

2) The staff sees the report to which they then review, look over the thread associated with that report, then discuss any possible actions with the other staff members.

In this instance of a certain thread,
https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f67/fo...231083/index2/

I'm assuming you are referring to the wiring diagrams from the factory service manuals?

The purpose of the copyright rule was to keep some from plagerizing another's work for profit. (IE: art, music, videos, etc..)

After reviewing the thread, we decided that it is used for instructional/learning purposes, as that is what this forum is for. This all goes back to the Staff reviews the reports and decides action. We saw nothing wrong with them or no harm in providing the help/tools another member needed to fix their vehicle as it was not for any profit/personal gain.

If we will not allow any instructional/quality posts to be made, the main purpose of this forum would be pointless.

We have been reviewing most of the rules and adjusting them accordingly to suit the times and members. In instance, outside links.
Used to be NO outside links but as the technology has aged, it is a valuable tool needed for our hobby. If a member needs to know "How to adjust their kickdown cable?", there are a few quality videos to show hands on how to. We will allow some of those, while keeping other guidelines in place such as "no nudity, profanity, drugs, etc...".

Sorry if this all seems confusing, but for all members, if anything is questionable, bring it to the Staff's attention by reporting, and they shall review and discuss accordingly.

Thank You.

So, what you're saying is it's a rule you can break when you want to.

To me, the way it is worded (or was last night), no copyrighted material is to be posted...period.

Explaining it the way you have is akin to saying the speed limit is 45 mph, but if I have to speed to get to work on time, it's ok, as long as I am on time.

Whatever. There have been many times in the past posting diagrams like that would have made helping others much easier, but I didn't because I was trying to follow the rules.

Guess I won't bother anymore.

You are taking all this the wrong way, do you need a hug?

The fact remains that no copy right laws have been violated in that post.

You're taking this completely out of context. Something was posted to help a member fix an issue. In NO way was any harm or foul committed.

By all means, if you wanted to post wiring diagrams or pics of a repair, or pics of pointing out a particular part to help a member with a repair, that's fine. That's why we have this forum.

Again, if a member thinks something is not right, send it to us and we will review and discuss it accordingly.

That's not true. Posting copyrighted material online means people get to use it without buying it, so the owner of the material loses money.

Just like it is against the law to copy & rebroadcast a movie....doing so takes money away from the people who made it.

But hey, who am I to question it.......

It doesn't work the same for books. When a book is bought the author gets paid for that book done and over.. Its how many books the author sold not how many times it was used.... The author does not get to say what the buyer does with the book.. The buyer can take pics of the book or parts of the book and post them up,,its his book. Now if the buyer starts making full copies of the book and starts selling them,,then we have an issue.

Chilton or another place is not going too try and take on the internet suing everyone to take the pics down..they would lose so much money its not worth it..they made the money they are going to get from the book when the book was bought...

Movies and music are different cause I can make money on the stuff, with commercials (radio) or TV... I cant make money on a few pics posted up,,,,, no where to put an Ad or commercial

If you want to be picky about it then cite where the information came from via a link, like how you had to do for research papers in school.

Post the useful info then say something along the lines of oh and by the way this is where I got the picture/information etc. with a link to the original photo or article.

Dude just shut it and get over it. You were told by an Admin and 2 moderators that it was fine.

I can't tell you how many times I've had a moderator or admin tell me something is ok.....only to later find out it wasn't.

Ever had a cop give you a ticket, only to have the judge throw it out cuz the cop was wrong ??

I bet I've had over 1000 people tell me "it's ok to do 60 in a 55, they won't give you a ticket" over my lifetime. That may be so, but it is still breaking the law.

Anyway, I reported a post that I felt was breaking a forum rule like we are all asked to do when we join. The rule doesn't say 'don't break any copyright laws', it says 'don't post copyrighted material'. There is quite a bit of difference in those 2 statements as they are written.

Funny how it seems as many or more have posted in this thread to make fun of me as have posted to explain or answer my question.

Now, I've basically been told, by "an admin & 3 moderators", that it's a rule that will be selectively enforced....fine by me....now I know how serious the rules are here.

Live & Learn...................

Hey man your question was answered by outlaw right away. He explained what the rule was and how it is enforced. You can post as long as its not for profit. It's not selective if the mods have a criteria for it. If it's educational purposes, like 99% of it is, that makes sense. Kind of like research and projects for college. Copyright laws are kind of put to the side if it's for "educational purposes". You can't really profit off a 20 page essay for school. But hey man its cool that you brought it up. Now it's all clarified for everyone to see.
