Default Want to buy 85 - 87 diesel Jeep Cherokee

I am looking for an 85 - 87 2.1L Renault diesel Jeep Cherokee. I know they are fairly rare and said to be low on power but that is what I want for my next project.
Thank you.

Two suggestions...

First... they were ALOT more common in Canada. If you can do some searching up there.

Second... Winnebago Lesharo motor homes from the same era used the 2.1l motor as one of their options. You can find them around from time to time.

Thank you, I am not really interested in shipping one from overseas. I appreciate the offer though.
I live in Oregon so traveling to Canada isn't out of the question, but I would just prefer finding something close to home.

If I can't find a stock 2.1L, is there a "relatively easy" diesel swap alternative?

Again, thank you for your input.

HudsonJM:

Keep looking for an original Diesel XJ with the J8S814/J8S815 in it (2.1L Renault Turbo Diesel). They're fun (as a 5-speed) --provided you go into this with the right mind set (less than 1%? of the US population could muster that --IMHO). Diesel XJs do on occasion pop up on eBay. Typically, they sell for around $2000 to $5000, depending on condition and the cost of Diesel. Most will need work, some will need a lot more work than the images may indicate... (such as maybe a bad cylinder head, which must be replaced since they cannot be reconditioned, etc. Head gaskets must be installed exactly as required by the manual otherwise it'll go again right way).

The 4BT doesn't make much sense, but it has been done. It's heavy, rough running and was never meant to be in something like a XJ (try back hoe or box van). Numbers aren't that great either (105hp for the turbo, unless you to a all-custom-crazy built).
If it has to be a Cummins, then look more closely at the 3.3L Diesel (YJ conversion has been done).
Or, find a rolled Liberty CRD and use its entire drivetrain in your XJ --that would be the nicest of all, IMHO.

Back on message: If you do get a 2.1L XJ Diesel (VIN "B"), make sure you're never in a rush with any repairs.
Parts are available, but everything takes time to get delivered. Some parts are only used on the XJ/MJ in the US and are therefore expensive (such as alternator, starter, and of course any of the engine parts). Parts can be bought at NAPA, AutoZone, Advance Auto (partsamerica.com), etc. (just do your own research before ordering/shopping!). Research means that you'd have to spend a lot of time online cross-matching part numbers (you'll get real good at this in very little time, --believe me!)

Be careful with advice regarding Winnebago LeSharo (and similar) --they didn't come with exactly the same engine! For example, the '83 LeSharos are NA (no turbo!) and therefore lack not only the turbo parts but also the internal oil cooling gallery (engine J8S232) etc. '84 and '85 LeSharos have the turbo and are almost the same, but don't expect a perfect match here either. Due to too many issues with the Renault Diesel, '86 and up, LeSharos were only available with the (very economical and robust) Renault 2.2L gas engine (also a RENIX system, IIRC).

In Europe, millions of 2.1L Turbo Diesels were sold (mostly in Renault vehicles) --and they weren't all that slow. Here a R21 TD with doing 170 km/h (~105mph). A Jeep Cherokee 2.1L Diesel can follow traffic at 80mph (~130km/h) w/o issues. If you do get a hold of an EU XJ (2.1L Diesel up to '93, then VM Detroit 2.5L) you're in good shape since all parts are either from a '85-87' XJ ('87 MJ) Turbo Diesel and those parts that aren't Diesel related can be matched with the 2.5L gassers. Whatever you can't find in a parts store, you can get through dealerships, such as http://www.berrysprinter.com/jeepparts.php - https://www.trademotion.com/memberse...&siteid=214358

Oh, and here's one typical example of oddities you are bound to encounter as a future 2.1L Turbo Diesel owner: Replacement air filters are next to non-existent in the US! However, after bit of research you will find that K&N makes a replacement unit (E-2402). Other than that, there appears to be only one (US) supplier for the relatively expensive filter elements (can't recall the company's name nor can I locate the link right now). Just get the K&N and you're good on that part!

Well, there's a lot more to say about these little aluminum engines... anyway, whatever you do, best of luck.

AR.

There is one in a local junkyard near me. The engine is supposed to be blown up. You could proably buy it pretty cheap

Thank you for the info. I still have not been able to find a diesel XJ.
As for the one in the Ohio wrecking yard... we will see, I am not desperate yet.

I just found a 93 cherokee with a 2.5 renault turbo diesel, the previous owner said that the throttle sticks, does anyone know if I could replace it and how much that would cost? Thanks!

Exclamation

Might be a bad injector pump... that can get expensive. Weird stuff pops up on eBay... Also, if it is a '93 it is not a 2.5L, it should be the 2.1L (J8S). Lastly, if it is a '93, make sure it has a very valid and clear title, otherwise it will be considered an import vehicle less than 25 years old and that is near impossible to get registered in the US. The VIN number will be detected as a "non-US" vehicle at your local DMV... (not a problem with a US[!] title.)
