I took my Jeep Cherokee in for safety inspection and they said the exhaust is shot. When I looked at the list of stuff that needs to be repaired the made a list of pipe fittings, and what not. I took a look under my jeep and from the exhaust to the connector has rusty on it. So I assume not the whole exhaust pipe needs to be replaced.
