Hello,
Regretfully, it looks like I'm selling my 98 Cherokee Sport. I picked it up off a co-worker last December with 137000 on the odo. Since then, I've fallen in love with the Jeep. I’m selling it because I now need a reliable DD, and I don’t have the time to commit to it. Otherwise, I would definitely keep it…
The XJ developed a pulsing squeak in the left front wheel, so I threw in rotors and pads a few months ago. Now the squeak is back, so I'm thinking the groove in the steering knuckle is making the inner pad stick. The buyer would need to weld it (I can provide a link to a write-up) or replace the knuckle. She's almost always starts on the second crank instead of the first. Low pressure at the rail, so I think there's a checkvalve problem at the fuel pump (An inline valve is a gamble that I didn’t want to take). The exhaust manifold has a crack. I noticed it the last time I seafoamed. Also, the tail pipe is loose from the muffler. I have a new clamp, just haven’t put it together. The CEL is on with O2 codes. I'll throw in a new upstream O2 if that helps me sell it. I didn't want to replace the O2 before the manifold for obvious reasons. A/C doesn't work (last on my list). 142500 on the odo now. No leaks. Regular 3k oil changes (2 since buy). She actually runs great. She just needs a bit of attention. PO was an adult that babied the Jeep (just didn’t do too much work). It's originally from Arizona, so it's seen about 5 years of NE weather.
PO work:
- Cap
- Rotor
- Wires
Work by my mechanic:
- CPS
- Other sensor/relay (don’t rem which)
Work by me (all within last three months):
- Raybestos rotors in front
- Wagner ThermoQuiet pads in front
- Champion Copper Plus plugs
- 703 injectors (courtesy of Programbo)
- Duralast water pump
- Duralast thermostat
- Upper and lower radiator hoses
- Dayco accessory belt
The private party KBB at the mid-level is $2925. Not sure how to price it. I'm asking for $2300 obo.
Jeep is in Watertown, MA. Mostly stock 1998 Cherokee Sport, 4L, red, auto trans. Power windows and doors (no remote, but has factory remote system). It has an aftermarket single CD stereo (sounds good: MP3/CD/FM/AM…). Spare in back.

Is the price high? I don't get it. I drive her once a week now to keep things moving. I drove her daily all winter with zero problems. I think this XJ would make a great project for somebody. If I had the time (and space), I would do it myself, but I'm picking up a WK to be the DD.
BTW, this is a 4x4 with a 231.

Might want to add a few interior shots, and at least 2 good under carriage shots - People worry about rust on northern cars (I grew up in Jersey and we worried about it there a lot!)
My Jeep club installed a lift on a members Jeep that was bought out of MI - it was hell getting all the rusted part loose - a lot of snapping and replacing, cutting and welding.
If the under carriage looks good and the interior is ok, those shots should help you move it.

So I started gathering interior and underbody shots, and linked the tailpipe to the muffler, in preparation for selling this Jeep. I was busy for a while with other stuff and didn't really have a chance to update this thread. Then, I realized that I need a truck for the winter, and went shopping. Long story short, I ended up trading the XJ in for pennies on a WK sale. Not ideal, but I'm a happy WK owner now.
The reason for this post: Thank you CherokeeForum, and members. The XJ and I wouldn't have made it this far without you.
The information here is invaluable. Best of luck to everyone!
