This guy installs the fitting the same way as you were originally going to by drilling a hole and putting the nut on the inside of the housing. I'd definitely prefer threading the housing instead.
Then again he's a Toyo-tard so I'm not surprised. lol

That said, I would never install that nut on the inside, for obvious reasons...I agree with putting it on the outside as a jam nut, or just leave it off.

Don't knock the toys, I ran one before my XJ, solid ride, and did stuff I never thought possible in stock form...ran Moab and lots of trails in Colorado many times...only mod was bigger tires. Was a 95 king cab, right before the Tacoma series...and some of the older ones are even better with a solid front axle...mine was IFS and it STILL kicked ***...

On the other hand, unless the copper tube also comes loose inside, the jam nut will just ride on the tube if it comes loose. So if there is enough clearance between the copper tub and everything else inside it should not do any damage if it did work off, just sliding around on the copper tube. Of course you would then have a loose fitting and probably leak gear oil.

I completely agree, my 4runner has 32's on it at factory ride height, it is awesome as a daily and occasional trail rig. I love the fact that the AW4 and the A340F are identical sans the bell-housing.

I finished installing it. Haven't gotten all the fittings for the air done up yet, I will do that next weekend. It is definitely open when not engaged and when tested with an air compressor seemed to lock up well, will have to get the whole air system set up before I find out if there are any leaks. I hope I never have to redo that. It was a good learning experience, but very time consuming and took some ingenuity. Will post some pictures from my phone later.
