How bad does it affect your visibility?

how much metal did you need to make this. And what kind of plate did you use to mount the tire on it

Just purchased the hitch today. Does anyone know of a company that makes the spare tire carrier to go with it?

I had a roof mounted spare on my last xj. I liked it because I never had to take it down. Didn't lose any storage space or visibility. Never noticed a difference in performance. Now I'm working on a new system. Whenever I get a flat, I press a button and Kate Upton appears with a spare. And beer. I can dream

You'll need 3 foot of 2x2 min 3/16, preferably 1/4 inch tubing. The tire mount is cut out of 1/4 inch plate and drilled and welded 3 wheel studs.

I purchased mine from Detours..........I think it's called the "Knucklebone"

It fits into a standard 2" receiver..........................But he also sells a bolt-on 2" receiver that you can mount anywhere on a standard square-tube trailer hitch...............
So now I have (2) receivers, and a recovery point............

I wanted to mount my spare tire over to the left as far as possible (without blocking the taillight) so I would have better visibility out of the back window..................

I relocated my license plate over to the right side of the hatch........
With my 31" tire on it, and folded down, there is just enough clearance to get the rear hatch open without hitting the tire.....................

So you're limited to a 31" tire?
I looked at the knucklebone, and $235 plus shipping was a bit pricy for my taste.
I see they have a rear drop version as well.

Like on the hood? Not that I have seen. I doubt you could successfully mount one on the front bumper... It would block too much airflow for our already warm blooded engines. Plus it would block vision/approach angle with a larger tire. I haven't seen any side mounted like on some rigs either. Back, Roof, Cargo area.

I can see it being a problem for some of the more serious off road stuff with the approach angles. If you have more of a daily driver setup used for camping/hunting on the weekends, I wonder if you had a bumper with a bull bar/small stinger angled out, if it would allow enough air to cool the engine if mounted to the front of that? For mine it wouldn't be a problem, the 85 with 2.5L runs pretty cool.

There is a little room to cut out a section on the bottom piece, for it to drop a little further...............I am pretty sure I could get a 33" on there and still open the hatch............

I saw a side mounted tire carrier on an XJ. It was stuck to the rear quarter, and looked ghetto as hell (hopefully that guy isn't a forum member...if so, I'm sorry).

If you do chose to mount it on a roof rack how many anchor points are needed on the gutter?
