Just got my email from Carid offering me other options, they really don't want to give me a refund. =/
Instead they want to keep my money and give me a cold air intake.

I called Spectre to see about these units as I was thinking about using one to clear up space in my engine bay, and was having trouble finding them in inventory anywhere.
I was told these are NOT discontinued, and they are updating the design. I was told they should back available in a few months. This is just what Spectre told me over the phone, so take it for what it is worth.
Thought I would comment since everyone thinks they are discontinued based off what CarID told a member here.

I have emailed Spectre/K&N (3) times recently (without answers - but I got them in the past from them) asking what is up, the last email was in depth how I thought it was a mistake to discontinue this design, and why if their thought was to replace the Spectre Cowl Intake with a K&N Cold Air intake would be a BIG MISTAKE.
Why fix what was not broke?, why discontinue an item without its replacement ready?
I bet it comes down to that $149 is not pricey enough for K&N so they are going to do some minor changes and price it at $249 or more.

The design could actually use some improvement. The filter they use is small, and it requires more frequent cleaning as a result. The fitment is also a little weird and could use a couple more adjustment points at the elbows rather than just having the welded bends.
So let's see what they come up with before bashing it.
Because the THOR intake isn't perfect either. Some of us don't like the idea of having the filter up inside the cowl.

Plus the thor kit is just a painted pvc pipe with a filter shoved in a hole at the end.

As I am trying to understand this, I would be ditching the little flappy thing at the opening of the intake box and the tiny hoses at the back of the air box but how will that affect mpg? Won't it cause the fuel to run really rich (then again I don't know if rich fuel is good or if it varies with engine temp. I will be taking my Jeep up to high altitude (from sea level to about 7,000-9,000 ft) so how will this affect how it drives in situations like that? Or daily driving at sea level?

it decreases intake air temperature. colder air is more dense, meaning there is more oxygen in colder air than hot. others posted intake air temps of 180* before an intake mod, 110* after. thats significant. Should improve you MPGs as the fuel will burn more efficiently as colder air mixes with it.
No firsthand experience with this intake at altitude, but again, you need more o2 at altitude vs sea level. Should help get more cold air into the intake manifold = more oxygen. Not sure if this will fix all your altitude problems but it won't hurt either.

I guess Sprectre (K&N its new owner) decided to go stupid with the new design - I always laugh at people with these intakes filters when wheeling through the deep water around here - I guess K&N just does not get it.

yes there are o2 sensors to help the engine manage its air/fuel mix. wait, just noticed you have an early model. Not sure about sensors on the early ones.

The tube is actually metal, not PVC. I've had it for 4 years now and it's been great. Went to clean the filter after 2 years and there was barely even any dirt on it.
