It put my projects behind schedule while I was learning, but I'll come out ahead in the long run. My brother also learned welding basics as a member of a local maker group. Both of these approaches overcome the biggest hurdles you have with trying to learn to weld on your own, which are simply getting started and knowing where to go next. I'm no expert now, but I now know what I need to practice and feel comfortable working on my own projects.

Keep in mind you can rent welding machines. Home Depot actually rents capable little Lincoln MIG machines in some locations for $41 per day. I don't think that includes a gas bottle, but it at least gets you flux core, or you can rent a bottle from a supply house. Equipment rental companies that rent backhoes and generators usually also have welders for rent. None of the welding supply houses around me rent welders (they just service the welders from the equipment houses), but it wouldn't surprise me if there are local welding supply companies that rent out machines on a per project basis.

Barnett performance used to make a Stage II chassis stiffener setup that was bolt on. Not sure if they are still around. Good Luck!

I agree. I paid $244 free shipping on a special from Barnett a few years ago.
