You need to buy a new downpipe. Replacing just the cats will probably be very difficult if not impossible, don't think it will be cost effective either. Good news is if you're lucky you don't have to do any cutting or welding.

Here is the part, double check though.

Spray down the bolts the day before and right before you start working with PB blaster or some other penetrating oil. They may snap or be stuck.

A good swivel socket and a ratchet should get the bolts up top out fairly easily. Same on the bottom. Slip the down pipe off or pry if necessary.

Edit: Are you sure they're the problem? Did they tell you at the inspection station or is it just throwing a code? The thing right before your muffler is also a cat, it should have an o2 sensor somewhere near it. (2000+ might be different.)

Hey Guys,

I am not the smartest when it comes to cars so that is why i am asking the experts! I have a 2012 V6 Laredo.. I am looking to get a new exhaust.. I want the car to have a deeper "Meaner" Sound. I only have one exhaust pipe etc... Any help would be awesome! THANK YOU!!!!!

I apologize if this has been asked or covered but I searched and couldn't find a definite answer.

This is what I have:



I need to know if there are gaskets/donuts that go between the pipes. I did not take it apart so I am unsure.

I have seen one thread that says I don't need a gasket and most others say I need a gasket but most of them are talking about a single pipe and not the two pipes like this.

O'Reilly's sold me a couple donuts but they don't look like they will fit.

Help!

Looks like they should bolt up without the donuts. I see the flares on the pipe and the ***** on the manifold (snickersnicker). Unless those are donuts stuck to the manifold, you should be good to go.

Ordering a new cat converter with my exhaust system (Gibson Swept Side cat back) and was wondering if the length of the cat mattered? I was looking at the Magnaflow stainless steel universal cats, but they have them in 13" and 16". My sock one measured 20" flange to flange. Does it really make a difference or can I just throw some extra piping in there if it's too short?

I would get a Steel Flex Joint and put in between your Cat and muffler. All to often the muffler acts as a rock skid, and having that flex joint allows it to flex a bit saving your pipe. You can shorten one of the Gibson pipes after the muffer to accommodate the extra length.

have a 96 2dr, 4cyl, 5spd, 2wd Cherokee and was wondering if these little Chrysler 2.5's need more backpressure like the magnum v8's, and if a aftermarket header would help or hurt.
Drilling out a broke exhaust stud, and have everything off anyhow so..





Oh, and to answer a much older post, (too old to do a quote I think)
On my '88 comanche's exhaust I doubled up 2 med glass pack style mufflers and it's rather quiet. (exiting at bumper)
So much so, that the tires and old weather stripping makes more noise than the Glasspacks.
If length is a concern, two small glasspacks together might do the trick. Kinda like the older Camaro baffled ones.
Since I have more room under than a Wrangler, I used 2- 18" ones I think.

On my big 81 Cherokee, I curved the 2 1/4" pipe from stock manifold out to the inside/rear end of the front springs and under the rockers, and used like 3' long glasspacks. NOT that loud considering it's a v8.
Like the Comanche, noises like the transfercase, rattling back window, 31" tires makes more noise than the exhaust. (plus, it takes all the heat away from the transmission and transfercase)
AMC stock 360, Holley 600vac, Edelbrock AMC sp2p, torqueflight, amc20 -3.31's- AND that exhaust gets me 15.7pmg, staying under 2000rpms hwy.

These aftermarket 'blanks' can be either quiet or loud-er by the direction of perforations inside. LOUD= flow with the perfs. Quiet= flow against the perfs.

Hey rocko,I think I want to do what you have done from the exhaust manifold to the straight piece after the bell housing.
My pipe is against the trans,not good.
I want to eliminate the squished pipe right after the manifold,& have the pipe custom bent to get it away from the trans & bell housing.
a picture of yours would be a help.
One of my concerns is the drivetrain hitting the pipe after the removal of the squish. Thanks

Yup... they sure do:



It will save your inlet and outlets as well... check this out:





Put flex in your system wherever you can. It will save your muffler and your header or factory manifold.
