What 35"s you guys recommend that aren't awful in the snow, decent on tread life (not crazy concerned lol) , and are good for someone who goes to primarily dirt/mud trails couple times a month? Heard Goodyear Duratracs are not bad?

Lots of good things coming out about the nitto trail grappler m/t. That's what I'm getting when I go a bit bigger. BFG KM2s are always good. I've got 4.56s with my manual on 35s and it's a bit too much to be honest. I've got about the same usage as you and wish I went with 4.10s. 1st is basically a granny gear now. Low range is more than enough to make up for a bit less gear. Autos need more help though so 4.56/4.88 there.

So I bought an '00 with a 4.5" lift but it came with no sway bars, I bought some but I can't seem to find disconnects for the rear one. Is there something that I'm missing here?

Yeah. Leave the rear off. They're useless unless you do real towing.

I will add, if the rear sway links were made 4" longer they would come in contact with sidewall of tire.

Need some help with my lift to tire ratio. I just got an 2001 XJ and I was thinking about doing a BDS 6.5" Long arm lift with 35x12.5x15 General Grabber AT2's. Any idea if the tires would rub or not? I'm almost positive 33s wont rub and im not looking to trim the fenders so if enough of you say 35s rub ill opt out for 33s. Need some good input. Thanks

I'm running 35x12.50 r15 procomp extremes on my 99 XJ with 4:56 gears I run down the highway 75mp 2500-2800rpm all day. The procomp tires have been on the rig about 2 1/2 years still have plenty of tread and are awesome in the rocks and mud. Not sure about snow... I live in Las Vegas NV lol

Default Newbie questions, Starting my 1st lift build. 1999 XJS

Hey all,
I just picked up my 4th XJ , Love the box! This one I will keep and customize.
It is all stock with no rot and minimal rust. 160K seems pretty strong and solid.

I am new to customizing and have some general questions , I dont plan on alot of off road , But living in New England we do get Deep snow.

1, What height lift kit should I get that needs the least modifications to stock setup. I am thinking 3"? If I go with a 3" what will I need to adjust/lower.

2, If I keep the stock rims , what size tire and mfg. would be best, and are spacers recommended.

3, I would like to put a plow on it for personal use. Any recommendations?

Any info is much appreciated, Thank you in advance.

Here's a handy chart for question 1...

to wit, I would recommend 3". I'm running a 3.5" lift and I love the height. I'm clearing 31" tires and will be upgrading to 33s soon (hopefully) but that's with a combination of trimming and lift. 3" should clear 31's without trimming in most cases.

Question 2 - I personally would recommend an aftermarket wheel with 4"-3.75" backspacing in order to keep your tires from rubbing LCAs and swaybar. If you're absolutely in love with your wheels, get a set of 1.5" spacers from a reputable company like spidertrax or G2 and make sure they are HUB-centric. If you're not doing hardcore wheeling every weekend in it, you shouldn't have a problem

Question 3 - Well... not a whole lot to plow here in Florida... someone else will have to step in and answer that. I know it's been done plenty of times and I'm sure there are still plow options out there.

Please don't. RC's 4.5" kit is one of the worst on the market. The leaf springs aren't long enough, and your ride will be terrible.

The company has known this for years, but they won't fix it. Instead, they'll try to sell you more parts for a smoother ride. This attitude is why I personally refuse to buy anything from RC

Aside from how much it inherently sucks, like Clown said, the kit itself might be a deal but you need a lot more to get it working properly.

Praise the chart. Chart is love, chart is life. All hail the chart.

2"-3" is common and easy. Cheaper in the long run. Upgrading from 2" to 3" isn't that hard, either. If you do it "right" the first time you can just add spacers and shackles to go up that extra inch, if you feel it necessary.

As for a plow, it depends on the plow you want. A number of stores, including Costco, have some electric "personal" plows, 6' plastic or aluminum blade, that hook in to a front 2" hitch receiver. You'll probably want some heavier leaf spring up front to take the weight.

I don't know how much road salt you get in your parts but something to stiffen up the front end in preparation for plowing would be very wise.
