So, since I bought my '91 XJ the driver-side hatch support will randomly pop out and result with the hatch dropping on my head. I have replaced the strut multiple times to no avail. I hate those shocks anyways because of how unreliable they can be. My solution?

If interested, stay tuned folks. I am going to fabricate a set of locking arms that will replace the hatch struts. The arms will fold down and slide side-by-side when the hatch closed. Once opened, they are extended fully and a key or support will be slid up to hold them in place.

Bare with me though, this may take some time. College doesn't usually permit to do very many metal-fab projects.

may i suggest getting struts from a newer xj (metal hatch) I have a '98 and i find mine a pain to pull down to start closing it. the struts work VERY well on mine. but if you are going ahead with this, I cant wait to see what you do, could be good for camping to hold the hatch open.

Hell I had totally forgotten about this thread! Check out my build for what I came up with! They work great and no more hatch on the head.

Yeah, i read your build but didn't have so much detail. Its not pvc right? looks like (2) different size aluminum rods and then a bolt in the middle that a cotter pin can go through. I think i have seen them at harbor frieght
