got a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4wd with automatic transmission

first question: what could cause the transmission not to shift out of first?

second question: what transmission does it have?

I had the same problem with my 1998 JGC it was the speed sensor for me. Seems to be a very common problem. Good luck. Hope this helps...
