8000 is plenty. Our xj's are usually under 4000 lbs. Get a 8k winch and a ****** block. You won't have any issues with that combo.
FYI, I just bought a XRC8 a few days ago. Totally impressed and only $299.

Very easy. It should come with instructions but it's real simple. Just attach a couple wires from the box to the winch, attach the box on the winch where you please, bolt the winch on with four bolts, then run the positive and negative wire to the battery. It's all bolt-on, no fabbing or wire messes to deal with.

From my Smittybilt Instructions:
Recommended Battery: 650ccA minimum for winching.
Make sure your battery is in good condition and meets at least the specs above. Alot of people running winches that use them alot also run an Optima yellow or blue top battery. They can handle the winches and aftermarket electrical accessories. Always have the vehicle running when using the winch as well. It keeps the battery charged. Avoid prolong winching times. Give the battery a breather every min or two of winching.
I used a milemarker winch on my TJ for three years using a die hard battery to power it. I found a die hard battery that matches the specs of the yellow top optima and it worked fine for three years of heavy abuse.
