I've been lurking since I bought my XJ, just checking out things I need to do to keep her running for a LONG time. I'm not planning on getting rid of it until it absolutely won't run anymore.

Went on a trip from VA to TX in my 1998 Cherokee Classic- 3" Rough Country, 31" BFG AT's, and a K&N CAI was all the mods I had done to it at the time. I used my Garmin 401 wrist GPS which was good to 6m to calculate my mileage. On highway I got between 19.5 and 20 MPG. In the city I always got between 16.5 and 17 MPG depending on how I drove. Off-road is always harder to estimate but to be safe I always underestimate. I use 10 MPG off-road, hasn't failed me yet and I always have some left over.

Recently drove from Iowa to michigan and got 20 to 22 mpg in my 1990 comanche. It's a 4.0 aw4 4x4. Also was straight piped at the time. Got about 11 around town which is very hilly here in iowa. Now I have a new exhaust system and saw a little improvement on highway up to about 23 to 24. But so far same in city till I fill up again to do a calculation.

You can see my mods in my signature and my overall is 17mpg and I'm heavily loaded all the time with gear in the cargo area. What helped me the most was when I re-geared to the 4.56's from the stock 3.55's, almost 5+ more mpg with that alone.
This really is an old thread that someone revived.

Engine: Both 4.0L
'00 XJ Sport. 198K miles, 5700 miles on completely rebuilt engine.
Originally and after complete engine rebuild I got 10-12 city, 16-18 highway.
Wanted better mileage and pickup.
Ran a couple cans Sea Foam through the tank and vacuum line then installed new 4 port injectors, swapped to an K&N air filter from Fram and now I am getting 13-15 City, 18-20 highway.
