a couple months ago my xj with the automatic would get stuck in 1st or 2nd gear and I'd have to beat the crap out of it to get it to shift. There was no sliping and sliding just stuck. My friend told me theres a screen inside the valve body that gets clogged. I already swapped the tranny with a 94 tranny. But I'd like to fix it and put the original back in. Basically My 89 is borrowing the tranny from my project xj. I have no knowlage of this tranny except its made by Toyota? I'd just like to find out possibilitys before I tear it down. which is something I'd rather not do if I don't have to. Thanks

 

Have you checked the filter?

 

where you say stuck do you mean wouldnt shift out of 2nd when it was in D? or wouldnt even do anything when manually shifted?

And yes toyota makes the AW-4...they used it in some of the older supra's......
