the best thing to do is build or buy an aftermarket bumper and attatch hooks to it if not i would think the best way to do this would be reinforcing the unibodi up frunt behind the bumper and attatching to the the unibody as long as nobdy yanks the hell out of ya but your bumper would be in the way and would get tweaked if any pressure is applied to rope when it makes contact with bumper.

I hope that made sence

Tow hook brackets are bolted to the unibody sandwiched together with the front bumper mounts, but they extend further back to allow through-bolting through the unibody "frame" rail.
If you look under your XJ at how the front bumper brackets bolt to the unibody, and then look at pictures of tow hook brackets on the 'net, it'll make sense.
The towhook attaches to a 1.5'x 2" tab that is at a 90 degree bend to the main part of the bracket and has two holes in it.
I have attached a pic of an installed towhook..it won't help too much, but what the hey...

HTH!

wow that set up decreases your approach angle quite a bit! Do you hit those hooks and brush guard mounts alot?

My XJ is stock height ...2.75 in BB lift is in the works. I don't wheel much now, but will more when the lift is in...so attack angle isn't a big issue.
The brush guard is primarily there to protect my front end from the lousy drivers here in the Bay Area.
Not a lot of places to wheel close to where I live.
