Exclamation Should the auxilliary fan always come on with the air conditioning?

This is on my 2001 XJ 4.0 Auto

I know the electic fan works because it turns on when it gets a little too hot but it doesn't turn on with the air conditioning.

I was under the impression that it should always turn on with the a/c.

If it SHOULD be coming on, what could the problem be?

Where should I start to trouble shoot?

I believe that with 00-01 the efan will come on only when the a/c pressure reaches a certain level. I could be wrong about that and someone with access to a 01 FSM will probably chime in with facts.

That's interesting. I think I know the problem then.

I'm pretty sure my A/C clutch is worn after a while it stops working.

I'm guessing that it never builds enough pressure to turn the fan on.

I think the next step is to see if I can remove shim from the clutch.

Thanks for the info!

Great! The temperature point for a 01 is different from the other years too. The efan will come on once the coolant is 223* and goes off once the temp is less than 217*. I know this because the PO put in an 01 computer in my 98...

You may also be low on refrigerant. My XJ with a pinhole leak only ran the compressor briefly on cooler days (longer on warmer). I put in some refill R12a and it brought the pressure up enough.

Do you happen to know how much refrigerant the '01 xj takes?

Should be printed on a sticker on the upper rad support. Open the hood and look down, there's supposed to be a blue decal with R134a information on it.

I just used the RedTek kit from Crappy Tire and used the pressure gauge lol

How is the performance of the redtek refrigerant? Off hand do you know if it comes with enough refrigerant to fill an empty system? I'm wondering if its colder than the factory r134a.

It's okay, not as good as R134a, beats the snot out of no AC at all though. I took a road trip last year for parts on a reasonably hot and humid day and had to have the thing on max recirculation with the fan on 4 just to stay alive lol. But on days where you want something to take the edge off it works well enough. If your system is totally empty you'll need a fair amount, and you'll need to figure out why it's empty or leaking.
