Question about transfer case and front drive shaft.
I have a 1996 XJ Country 4x4 and need to replace transfer case and front drive shaft. I took it to mechanic and he said he could get a transfer case for $650 and a front drive shaft for $250. I found a tc and drive shaft for $200 total about an hour away, but it's from a 1990 XJ. Will this work or do I need to check for a certain type to make sure it will work? If not, which years do I need to be searching for? Thanks so much.

I just found out that I have the 231J tranny case so as long as I find the same kind I should be okay, right?
I don't know what type of drive shaft I have, is there different types?

Yeah there are two kinds of drive lines I can think of Double cardon and the stupid cv kind. you would need to find out what spline count you have. 21 or 23.

I was told I had a 242 tc, but went under last night to double check and I have a 231J. I tried to read something on the drive shaft, but couldn't make out the lettering. Is there a way to tell by looking at it?
I have also been thinking about waiting until spring to replace t-case and drive shaft. If I wait, can I damage anything else? I also have two different sets of tires on it because I had to replace the front two and didn't want to spring for a whole new set until I lift it in the spring. Can I damage anything else by having two sets of tires if I keep it in 2wd? Thanks for everyone's help.
