Default Heater core help!

Ok, I am trying to get my heater working a little better after complaints from the people I give rides to, including myself. I cant seem to find the little hose fitting that I can slide right into the heater core hose. Basically, I need a kind of "write-up". Does it matter which I tube I spray water through? I read somewhere it is good to flush in both directions multiple times. Also, someone mentioned that my 1991 XJ may have some kind of check valve on the heater hose. What is this and can I bypass it for the flush? Thanks a lot everyone!!

Any help? I found a connector on one of the heater hoses that looks like a 'T' with a smaller hose coming off of it. Is this the check valve?

Yes. As far as I know it hasn't been flush in quite a while (when I swapped the radiator, the coolant looked disgusting). So, I just want to flush the heater core as much as possible and see if I can knock junk clear of it and let it work more efficiently.

That's what I figured, but then someone mentioned a check valve and I found that one connector. But I was thinking just disconnecting it from the connector and I should be good to go.
