So as I'm finally getting to dive back into this beast(been out of town a week for work) I am looking at this radiator. Man this thing looks almost brand new. I think it would be a shame to pull it for the conversion, if I don't have to. I know I heard/read about installing that inline spout. Is there a way to convert without changing the radiator? Looks like someone already planned on it? I didn't pay attention to this before, with all the other stuff I was doing.

Just pulled the water pump as well to make sure its all in one piece. So I have found, that the only thing that wasn't right with this thing, was it was missing the thermostat. I'm still wondering why it got so hot. When I got back home that day, I let it sit in the driveway and idle, and it started cooling down. So I'm at a loss for what the issue is. Fan clutch appeared to be worn out, but idk that it actually is. Is it over kill to go ahead and convert the cooling system to an open one, install new fan clutch, maybe new water pump, new thermostat housing(this one seems on its last leg), and new hoses? Of course fresh fluid as well.

Put a Napa 703-1396 cap on your pressure bottle.

The "original" caps are cheap chinese junk now. The volvo cap has a few advantages.
1) It fits and seals even on cheapo chinese bottles where the black ones don't.
2) It has a low profile and doesn't hit the hood when things warm up.
3) It has an operating pressure of 22 PSI where the chinese crap have an operating pressure of 16 PSI on a good day.

I ran a closed system for ever. After my 4th pressure bottle cracked it was time to convert. Seen plenty running hot issues fixed with the volvo cap. ...Cherokee King....Morning Major...lol...

I have an 01 XJ, 125k and in good shape. Runs at 210 always and creeps up a few at idle in hot weather, especially with a/c running. Gets to maybe 215. I have flushed system, and now am thinking about changing thermostat. I see alot if posts referencing the 195 thermostat. Good choice? No coolant leak or symptoms of the 0331 head (yet)
What do you guys recommend?

so as I'm putting all this back together, im seeing there is no vacuum hose going to the heater control valve. also, the little T shaped tubing section that it connects to is kinda rusty on the inside. i would like to get it all cleaned up, but is there a way to just bypass the heater core, or replace that valve? does it hurt to stay opened all the time? i have no clue which hose connects to it.
i will say this, I'm kinda getting aggravated at this thing. if its not one thing, its another. i noticed there is a special setup that connects to the bottom of the reservoir. too much headache. if this radiator wasn't in such good shape, i do believe it would have got converted. still may happen later on. for now, i want to get it running without over heating
