It's inside the fuel pump, which is inside the fuel tank. To replace it, you'll need to remove the fuel tank. If you have a lot of miles, you may want to just replace the fuel pump while your in there.

What year is your Cherokee?
This post is "97 and older.

Just replaced mine today on my '95!

Sorry, no pics... your filter is on the frame rail on the drivers side, just above the rear tire. Two hose clamps and a 11mm bolt on the fuel filter strap.

Prior to removing filter, be sure to relieve fuel pressure!!!

To do this, remove gas cap and remove test port cap on fuel test port, it is located on fuel rail. depress schrader valve.

This link has pics and may help with this procedure...

Heres a picture its in side the drive side rear tire wheel well. I just replaced mine two days ago. Be Care full and make sure that you let the pressure off before you disconnect it .

http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthrea...ng+fuel+filter

Naxja has some stuff on fuel filter replacement. General consensus is to drain and drop the tank. While you are replacing the "sock" filter, you might as well swap out the whole unit (pump and sending unit) and start out with a whole new setup rather than having to pull the tank again at a later date. Napa or OEM seems to be the product of choice in terms of reliability.

HTH.

that sucks the only filter is in the tank, that freaking stupid... I know theres a pre filter screen on the fuel pump on it but then the external filter. Every car I've had has had an external filter either by the rear tires or up by the engine.

Just changed mine on my 89 cherokee a few days ago, took less than 10 minutes.
Good luck dropping the tank and all that pita.

The filter is designed to last the life of the fuel pump. It's no big deal and not a maintenance item. Leave it alone unless you're having fuel delivery problems at which point you should probably be replacing the fuel pump anyway.
