Default Cooling System Problems, Temp Question ???

I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport W/ 4.0 6cyl. 4WD...

The Aux electric cooling fan flew apart and was so out of ballance that it was shaking the whole truck. So I replaced it with an Imperial 10" electric fan from Auto-Zone.
Before this problem I never noticed at what temp the engine ran. But now I am watching it and it stays around 210* If i'm in town or moving slow etc. It will climb to about 215-220*

My question is Does this sound normal for 95* weather ?

The new fan is working great and comes on at around 220* .

I bought the Jeep used and have no idea what temp thermostat is installed ??

Thanks in Advance !!
What temps are normal to see, And at what temp should I begin to worry about serious damage to this motor, It has 180+K Miles on it ?

stock thermostat temp is 210 on most which if your like me is a little hot for my liking you can get a 190 or a 180 from your local parts store. hope i helped

210 is the factory specified operating temp. Above that more than a few degrees is not unusual but if it stays above 215 for a few minutes or longer then the auxillary fan is not cooling well enough. You might consider that the aftermarket fan may not be moving enough air for your situation.

Thanks for the replies !!

I may change the thermosatat to a 180-190* And it could likely do with a good flushing too.

I think the new fan is moving more air than the stock one did, But i'll keep an eye on the temps for a while and make sure.

I just wanted to be sure about the normal temp, Because 210* sounded a little hot to me....and even in town today it never got over about 215-218* (on the factory gauge!)

Thanks For the Help !!!

Matt

Matt you may take one other factor into consideration. The ECU controls the timing and looks for feedback from various sensors to make the determination of timing and fuel injector pulse width. One of those factors is temp. If the temp is lower the mixture is rich to help heat it up quickly. The temp is set at 208-212 degrees by the computer as the ideal temp. If it is lower it remains as a rich mixture (retarded timing and longer injector pulse width) thus causing poorer fuel mileage. Just thought you should know.

When I first got our Cherokees, I too thought 210 was a bit high.
But after reading-up on the Xj quirks. Straight-up 210 is normal.

I switched both of ours to 180* and am quite pleased.
Stays almost 1 line below for most of the time. When sitting in traffic w/AC on it climbs to 210 but drops down once you start moving.

Thank You !!

I never thought about that, And as long as it's running OK. I will just leave well enough alone !

Thanks for the great info. This place is great, Glad I found it !

x2 what blue said..

There is a reason why most new cars that have temp gauges now days do no have numbers..If some folks knew what temp their cars were sitting at they would freak...

Also you might consider replacing the t-stat as it might be old and wearing out depending on how long ago it was replaced..Also depending on how long ago your anti-freeze was drained and replaced you may consider draining and replacing with some good 50/50 mix...good clean coolant will do wonders for keeping an engine cool compared to dirty coolant..

dunno..but if ya use green it should stay green...if not then something in the cooling system isn't flushing out...or something with the well water and coolant causing a reaction..
