Hello all,

I have some questions about installing a hitch on my jeep. I've called a few places to get quotes on installation including the hitch. I've got anywhere from $200 -500 for quotes...but I am considering doing it myself.

My needs: I really just want the hitch for my Mtn. bike rack. Although, I may be towing a 6x10 Uhaul trailer about 700 miles in the fall. No boat towing or anything like that.

My questions: Can I just bolt one on? If so, how difficult is it? One guy said he needed to remove my gas tank...is that neccessary? What about wiring? Any advice would help. I live in SLC.

The hitch is bolt on, with the hitch I have on mine there is a bolt behind the gas tank (2" hitch), I haven't removed that bolt but the tank may need to be removed. I think you would also need the nut strips that go in the frame if their not there already. It sounds like to me you may be able to get away with using a 1 1/4" hitch instead of a 2" hitch with may be an easier install but wouldn't provide as much weight capacity.

I also bought the 2" hitch and it was a bolt on I did not have to remove the gas tank. pretty easy to do,6 bolts i believe. be sure to buy one that is a direct fit made for your jeep and not a one size fits all.

Keep an eye out on ebay. I bought a new hidden hitch for $68 shipped. When I arrived home from work there was a box on the porch that had to of measured 5'x4'x2' easily large enough to hold a front fender. I figure they gave me the hitch almost for free because shipping had to of cost them $30.

i just installed a curt hitch (13084) last week and it was a piece of cake on my 98. i did end up removing the bumper to make it easier, but that was the most difficult part. no need to remove gas tank. I think i paid $125 shipped and install took an hour or so.

I just did mine yesterday actually. The hardest part was putting the bolts in,,having to use fishing wire to get then in..then installing both the hitch and skid plate. But other than that it only took me a few hours. It was really easy. If that 200 includes the hitch and you don't wanna mess with it at all then id say go for it.
