Default 99 fuel pump?

I have just finished (I thought) refreshing a 99 sport
All new sensors cooling system .. ignition .. a new fuel pump module plus upgraded to 4 hole injectors It starts and runs Great!
Filled up to 3/4 of a tank went out on the highway after about 10 mins there was a slight flutter? But ran fine over all drove 60 miles stopped for a hour then on the return trip as the fuel gauge dropped closer to 1/4 of a tank it started surging sometimes violently? like it was starving for fuel? I pulled over and the revs were down to about 200rpm As soon as I stopped the idle went back to a smooth normal about 800 rpm? It continued to play up all the way home once I got home perfect idle again I checked the fuel pressure when running 51psi There is no miss or splutter just seems to starve for fuel as the tank gets lower under a 1/2 tank?
Could the pump be overheating? I am going to have to bite the bullet and buy another pump as that is the only thing I can think of? Anyone had anything similar happen to them? There are No Codes and starts and runs great around town But the highway under load it is a nightmare Any Ideas

I'm curious to hear some responses on this because I have been experiencing a similar hesitation/miss/surge/hiccup as the gas gets lower. I've noticed it will happen occasionally around 1/4 tank, and more frequently around 1/8 tank and below.

What brand pump did you put in it?

I just responded to a similar question where the guy said in his '98 it runs fine till it gets to about a 1/4 tank.
Somebody once told me that the gas in the tank helps cool the fuel pump.
First thing that popped into my head so that was my response.

Yes, it's true that the gas cools the pump. If the pump is on its last legs, this might be the reason. When it gets hot, it gets weak.

I'd put a fuel pressure gauge on that thing.

thanks for the response guys the pump that is in it now is a Osias brand module a cheapie it was $79 aud off ebay Thats about $50 to you guys I know I know a cheapie But when you are stuck and being a pensioner i went cheap to get it going I have ordered a TYC brand module off rockauto a mid priced unit I hope this fixes it As I said above I can go out there and put the gauge on it and with the engine running it reads 51 psi ? It must be giving up under load and getting hot as the fuel level drops It takes about 2 weeks for a rockauto order to get to the Aussie Outback I think I will just drive my 96 until then if I have to go out of town I dont want to get stuck on the side of the road I will keep everyone informed. What are the TYC brand pumps like anyone know Please don't tell me I bought more rubbish

I get the being on a fixed income being retired myself.
The general consensus is you buy a Bosch fuel pump only.
I think Carter was the brand coming in second.
Personally I would just replace the whole unit. But they ain't cheap.

Amazon Amazon

Maybe you could just try replacing the pump itself. Be much cheaper.

My dad always used to say that cheap tools are false economy. Same holds true for auto parts.

There is one thing I just noticed going back to the links I posted.
The sock/filter on the pumps.
They look different.
Now that could just be an illustration thing.
But I vaguely recall reading that they might be different in the '97 to '01 years.
My parts catalogs were of no help cause only for '97 does it appear they list a sock separately.
And I am not even sure if I am reading it correctly.
Or if it even matters.

Cue Sad Melodramatic Music!
It Did It AGAIN!?
What a day it all happened I went down the servo to get fuel and suddenly the fuel cap started working after all these years and of course I have no key Home smash lock with screwdriver back to get fuel I put 34 liters in and discovered the gauge is not working Great! Went to Barcaldine It goes like a rocket so smooth then about 45 mins out which was about 40k out of Barcaldine it started the usual dance? WTF!
This is Crazy? I cant blame the fuel pump again?
At Barcaldine I swapped the asd and fuel pump relays Just for the Hell of it .... I am in town for about a hour and a half doing a few things (cool down time) Then we come home a hours drive Once again it ran perfectly cruised at 110 at 2100ish rpm after a half hour the dance started well it wasn't the relay then?
To top things off we ran out of fuel about 9 k out of town my calculations and no gauge were way off and I had to keep it at about 120 on the way home to try and keep it smooth ... So I burned more fuel oh well Father in Law to the rescue and its empty as I have to pull it out again to fix the gauge ...
Oh Joy Why do I get to have SO Much FUN!
Put about 5 liters in it and it started perfectly and ran perfectly all the way home? (15 min cool down) HMmm Pattern? I just want a beer after today
I am out of options ? I don't know what to do? no point throwing more $$ at it?
I don't know why I did it I might be grasping at straws but as soon as we got home I popped the hood and felt the fuel line and it was HOT!? now we had just had a 15 min rest 9 k ago? what about how hot it would be if I didn't have to stop and running out of fuel was the same symptom as the dance sort of? Gas Bubbles in the fuel? I am going to insulate the line (FREE) and see what happens?
But don't it go with the 4 hole injectors Whoa crisp I got the timing cover gaskets for the 96 today no magnet bummer I got all my bits now Just gotta make the 99 Civilized
Insulate the Fuel Line is all I got left?.......

Yep. You're an idiot. Just like the rest of us!

We've all done that kind of dumb from time to time.

After a few beers I got over my "I'm a idiot complex" and back to the cause of my problem I got on to some house insulation it is sorta like the material used in dash sunshades only thicker stiffer and honey combed like thick cardboard I am going to insulate my fuel line and the fuel rail and see how that goes ?

Well I fixed and I don't know how I did it, I did all the insulation, then the fuel cap that never locked decided to lock, So I persuaded it with a screwdriver and then had to get a new one. Which I had before highway testing So I don't know was it the heat or was it the cap?
