Default Changing Differential Fluid

Alright so I'm planning on changing my differential fluid and i was reading this guide.

http://www.getahelmet.com/jeeps/maint/diff_fluid/

Only one question. When applying the bead of gasket sealer, what happens when you tighten the cover and there is to much sealer and it gets inside the housing? I would think that would be bad....thoughts?

Just lay a thin layer of RTV and it will be fine. I did mine and put a 1/4 bead and it has not leaked in a year...Tj

You really don't need to put gobs of Permatex to get a good seal. Make sure that you get all of the old sealant off both the pumpkin and the cover then put an even coating on the cover and let it set for 10 or 15 minutes before bolting the cover back on, you will be alright!

it's not so bad if some squeezes into the diff when you tighten the bolts. just make sure you let it dry a little before adding the fluid.

I agree with Dan4governor. When I went to replace the factory diff fluid, I pulled off the cover and there was a solid 1/4" bead inside the diff. I don't know if they did that on purpose or not but it took a while to remove it all.

don't worry about the rtv. if you do put a little too much on, and it falls off inside, the gears will shred it up with no worries. it's not hard enough to do any damage.

and yes, a 3/8 ratchet or extension with no socket fits the front fill hole.

I couldnt figure it out. Called my dad.
He saw it, jus grabbed the extension and threw it at me lol.
