Default Burning up fuel pumps

I am going to look at a 1990 Pioneer and the guy says that it keeps burning fuel pumps up (melting off the sender). I was thinking most likely bare wires touching somewhere but what do you guys think it could/would be? Thanks for the help!

Kinda what I was thinking too. I just wonder if it's the original pump and it finally crapped out.

I'll check the ground also. Where exactly is the ground for the fuel pump behind the tail light? I've owned a 95 but never had an issue with any kind of wiring with it

Possibly the resistor is bypassed or damaged. Left side inner fender near the front. White ceramic thing around two inches long with one wire at each end and a bolt in the middle (from memory and I've been drinking so beware).

By passing resistor is something that was done from factory in later years it causes no harm to pump. Bad ground or connections will cause ill effects. Cruiser54 is the Renix king following his advice will net best results with your new Xj if you make the purchase.

Perhaps the owner is using Airtex pumps?

So it's okay if the resistor is bypassed as long as it has a good solid ground/connection?

Sure.

freegdr has it bass ackwards.

In 87 they had no resistor. Customers complained of fuel pump noise. A resistor was added to quiet the pump down.

Oh okay. Gotcha. Are the Airtex pumps junk or something?
