Uncommon, but possible. It would be cause either by brush wear (losing contact with sliprings = losing current transfer area) or by everything getting really crudded up in there.

I'd probably pull the alternator, clean it out (use electric motor cleaner,) and replace the brush pack - but that's just me.

Chances are good that the coils are still fine, it's just the brushes and such that are causing trouble for you.

Which one's that? I probably have six Jeep boards I've got going at a time - if you want me to see something specific, please send along a link... (I'm not lazy, I just have a limited amount of time, cast a broad net, and sometimes miss things anyhow...)
