91 cherokee "code 41" how to fix
Hello all,
I'm in a bit of a bind. Usually I drive a Civic for a daily while I can work on my newly acquired 19 Cherokee. However, the civic broke down Saturday night and now i'm getting code 41 on my cherokee. From what I can gather, 41 Alternator field control circuit open or shorted is the best answer i've found.
Any shortcuts on how to pinpoint the exact part that needs to be replaced? I'm not trying to just throw money at this project by fixing things that aren't causing the problem.
Thanks in advance!
Joseph

Often the alternator itself. What is the voltage reading on the dash gauge? If you don't have one, verify this with a meter directly at the battery.
With a healthy battery and charging system, this should read approx. 13.5 - 14.0 volts.

Well I posted this from work, and the strange thing is the code disappeared for the drive home. Voltage is hanging out around 14, no code. I did find a vacuum leak on my intake manifold that I fixed, no code since. Didn't think the two could be related...thanks for the advice I will keep you posted.

I've been through the code 41 PIA. Replace the alternator, it will fail very soon.

No relationship between the code 41 and the vacuum leak you repaired.
Keep a close eye on that voltage gauge. If it dips and the CEL comes back on, I think your alternator is going south.

Was getting a code 41 on my 91 recently. The alt was only putting out 10 volts upon initial start up, but would jump back to 14 after full engine warm up. This lasted for about 2 months before the alt finally gave up it's ghost. Replaced it and have had no additional problems.

I had code 41 come up on and off over the summer. Come winter the code was on a lot more. No voltage from alternator when it was cold out until the Jeep warmed up. I tried cleaning all my ground connectors and the connectors for the alt. Didn't work. Fixed it by putting in a rebuilt alternator.

Thanks for the replies guys.
So far haven't had the code come back, but I will keep an eye on it. I'm sure I'll be posting more soon per this was not ready to be my daily but the civic is still out of commision
